About Us
The People’s Organization for Women Empowerment Trust (POWER) is a women-headed, women-led, and women-managed not-for-profit, non-political organization that exists solely to work for the empowerment of women and girls. Established in 1998, POWER was born out of a deep realization that women—especially from rural and marginalized communities—needed to come together to challenge socio-economic injustice, gender-based violence, and cultural practices that perpetuated inequality.
Our journey began with a small group of spirited women from farming families in rural Tamil Nadu. These women, despite coming from modest socio-economic backgrounds, were educated, determined, and deeply aware of the systemic oppression that kept women subjugated. What started as an informal women’s collective soon grew into a strong movement. It was driven by the conviction that women's dignity, equality, and rights must be upheld at all levels of society.
In the early days, the group faced severe resistance. The idea of women stepping out of their traditional roles and questioning patriarchal authority was considered outrageous. The founders of POWER endured threats, ridicule, and even physical violence. But their determination was stronger than the barriers they faced. They used every available platform—village meetings, small group discussions, and informal study circles—to raise awareness, question injustice, and strengthen women's collective voice.
Recognizing the need for formal identity and legal protection, the group registered as a legal trust under the Indian Public Charitable Trusts Act, 1882 on 24th December 1998 (Reg. No. 120/1998). Since then, POWER has also been registered with the Income Tax Act of 1981, gaining both 12AA and 80G exemptions, making it eligible to receive support for charitable activities. Over the years, the organization has built strong partnerships and solidarity networks with both national and international agencies committed to women's development and social justice.
Today, POWER holds all necessary legal recognition and certifications from State and Central Government authorities.
To collaborate with people and organizations in the communities of our involvement to facilitate transformative changes addressing the root causes of inequalities, discrimination and unfair power equations.
To be a catalyst for positive transformation of the lives of girls and women, specifically the marginalized, by enriching their lives through relevant education, innovative healthcare, gender equality, human rights, participatory inclusive development structures and market-focused environment-friendly sustainable livelihood skills & opportunities to achieve immediate & lasting changes in their lives
